Adult Education Volunteer

About a month ago, I emailed the Dean of Adult Education at
Brewster Baptist Church, volunteering to be of service. I
have done all kinds of church chores in the past, including
busing tables at church dinners. She replied enthusiastically,
inviting me to meet her again, wherein she would tell me what
needs to be done "and you can pick what you like."

When we did meet the following week, she had forgotten the
latter part of the invitation and was ready to assign me to
perform a major role in marketing a panel discussion to be
held January 12th. Actually, it is the outcome of a previous
meeting with the Dean, when I suggested a continuing
need for a basic course in Christianity for new members.

And that's exactly what will happen, beginning with a two
hour panel of present and retired clergy who will answer
questions to "Everything you always wanted to know
about Christianity but were afraid to ask!" Then after
that, a follow up series on Sunday for five weeks, with
a short DVD at the outset. This will be conducted by the
Chaplain, so it will likely be all lecture.

My assignment was first, to sort out all the various tasks to be
performed. They came to me in bits and pieces of numerous
emails. I realized right away that a simple project plan was
required, so I spent a day compiling a spreadsheet. The
headings are Task, Day of Week, Date Scheduled, Date
Accomplished, and Responsible Person. The Dean and I
exchange the Excel file, making additions and corrections.
We are up to twenty-six separate tasks, now.

Next comes the Public Service Announcement, to be faxed
or emailed to the media. I wrote a simple press release,
based on the syllabus. Two lists of media addresses were
furnished by BBC members. There seemed to be some
lack of convergence in them, and obsolescence. So I spent
another day researching fax addresses and directions
from local media. On Wednesday, we will send the press
release.
